Most robot vacuums run somewhere between a fridge and a normal conversation in their lower suction modes, and closer to an upright vacuum at full boost. The louder surprise is the auto-empty dock, which runs for a few seconds at a much higher level than the robot ever does.

Noise matters more in British housing than most product pages acknowledge. Terraced houses share walls, flats share ceilings, and a great many people now take calls from the same room they clean.

What it will do instead is show you how to judge noise properly, because the specification sheet is only ever half the answer. Suction mode, brush design, floor type and dock behaviour all change what you actually hear, and none of them appear in a single headline figure.
What a decibel actually means in your house
The decibel scale is not linear, which is why the numbers mislead people. A rise of about 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud to the human ear, and a change of about 3 dB is the smallest most people notice at all.
So a machine at 70 dB is not slightly louder than one at 60 dB. It is about twice as loud, and that is the difference between background hum and something you turn the television up over.
These are the everyday references worth holding in mind. Treat them as approximate, because a real room changes everything.

Tone matters as much as volume, and nobody puts it on a box. Two machines measuring the same can feel completely different: a low, steady hum disappears into a room, while a high-pitched whine or a rattly resonance pulls your attention every few seconds. Wheel noise crossing a threshold or a tiled floor often registers more than the motor does.

Suction is produced by a fan moving air, and moving more air makes more noise. That is why every mode step up is audible, and why the single most effective noise control you have is choosing a lower mode for daily runs and saving maximum suction for when it is needed.
Carpet detection interacts with this. A machine that boosts automatically on carpet will get louder as it crosses onto a rug, then settle again on hard floor. That is the machine working correctly rather than a fault, but it does mean a carpeted room sounds different from a tiled one.
The brush design
Stiff bristles scrub against a hard floor and grout lines, and that scraping is a high-frequency sound that carries. Rubber rollers flex instead of scratching, so they tend to produce a lower, smoother note on hard flooring.
Anti-tangle designs help here for a second reason. A roller wrapped in hair drags against its own housing, and a labouring roller is both louder and less effective than a clear one. Two minutes a week on the side brush and roller keeps the machine sounding the way it did when new.
The floor underneath it
Hard floors reflect sound, so tile and LVT make any machine sound sharper. Carpet absorbs the airborne noise but can transmit more low-frequency rumble through the wheels. Wooden floors sit between the two, and a suspended timber floor in an older house can resonate in a way a concrete one does not.
An empty room amplifies everything. The same machine in a furnished lounge with curtains and a sofa sounds quieter than it does in a bare hallway.
Are self-emptying docks loud?
Yes, and this is the part most buyers are unprepared for. When the dock empties the robot it runs a powerful fan to pull debris up into the bag, and for those few seconds it is considerably louder than the robot is at any point during cleaning.
The saving grace is duration. Cleaning runs for half an hour or more; the dock empties for something in the order of ten to twenty seconds, usually once at the end of a run. Most people find a short burst easier to live with than a sustained hum, but it is a burst, and it will be noticed in a quiet house.
The practical consequences are worth planning for.
- Do not site the dock against a party wall or a nursery wall. That short burst is exactly the sort of noise that travels.
- Do not site it in a bare hallway. Hard surfaces and no soft furnishings make it sound worse than it is.
- Schedule the run so the empty happens when it suits you, rather than discovering it at two in the morning.
- Docks that also wash and dry a mop add a pump and a fan of their own, which is more sound in total but each part is milder than the emptying cycle.
None of this is a reason to avoid an auto-empty dock. It removes the most frequent chore in the category. It is simply a reason to think about where it goes before you plug it in.
Where noise actually matters in a British home
Flats with a neighbour below
Sound travels downwards through floors far better than it travels sideways through walls, so a robot vacuum in a first-floor flat is mostly heard by the person underneath, as wheel rumble rather than motor noise.
Late-night cleaning is where this becomes a genuine problem rather than a courtesy. Councils have powers to deal with noise nuisance complaints, and while one vacuum cycle is unlikely to meet that threshold, a nightly one at an antisocial hour is the kind of thing that starts a dispute. Schedule for daytime or early evening if you share a floor.
Naps and bedtimes
Zone cleaning solves most of this. There is rarely any need to clean the whole house at once, so set the machine to do downstairs while a child sleeps upstairs, and the bedrooms at a different time entirely.
Working from home
Calls are the common complaint, and the fix is scheduling rather than a quieter machine. A run that starts twenty minutes before your first meeting, in the rooms you are not sitting in, is invisible. A run that starts mid-call is not, whatever the decibel figure says.
Open-plan kitchens and hard floors
Open-plan spaces with tile or LVT are the least forgiving acoustic environment in a modern British home: hard surfaces, few soft furnishings and nothing to break up the reflections. Expect any machine to sound louder there than it does on a carpeted landing.
Can you run a robot vacuum at night?

These are the changes that make a real difference, in the order worth trying.
- Schedule around your life, not the machine's. Cleaning while the house is empty makes noise irrelevant, and it is the single most effective step.
- Use zone cleaning. Clean the rooms you are not in. Whole-house runs are rarely necessary day to day.
- Drop the suction mode for maintenance runs. Daily light cleaning does not need maximum power, and lower modes are meaningfully quieter.
- Split vacuuming from mopping. Two shorter, quieter runs are easier to place in a day than one long loud one.
- Move the dock. Off the party wall, out of the bare hallway, and ideally onto or near something soft.
- Keep the roller and side brush clear. A labouring brush is a louder brush.
Choosing with noise in mind
Since no manufacturer figure is available across this range, judge on the things you can verify.
Look for a machine with a genuine spread of suction modes, so you can run it low most of the time. Prefer a rubber roller over stiff bristles if your floors are hard. Consider how the mop behaves, because a system that lifts or removes its pads is doing fewer things at once on carpet. And plan where the dock will live before you buy, not after.

Who should not rely on a robot vacuum for quiet cleaning
If you need to clean while someone sleeps in the same room, no robot vacuum is quiet enough, and a carpet sweeper or a manual sweep is the better answer. If your only cleaning window is late at night and you have a neighbour below, reconsider the window rather than the machine. And if you are hoping for silence rather than a low hum, that product does not exist in any brand's range.
