Yes, robot vacuums go over most rugs. Low and medium pile are straightforward, and what decides it is the machine's threshold climbing height in millimetres against the height of your rug edge. Shag pile, loose tassels and thick rug pads are where they struggle, and all three have practical fixes.
This is the question that stops people buying, and it deserves a proper answer rather than reassurance. A rug is a small cliff, a soft surface and a trip hazard all at once, and each of those three things affects a robot vacuum differently.
What follows explains the mechanics, goes rug by rug in millimetres, and gives you a five-minute check to run before you order anything.
Can a robot vacuum climb onto a rug?
If the rug edge is lower than the machine's stated climbing height, yes, and it will do it without fuss. The figure to compare is threshold crossing height, which manufacturers publish in millimetres.

Since almost no domestic rug is anywhere near 60 mm thick, climbing the rug itself is rarely the problem. Why a rug confuses a robot vacuum
The cliff sensors think it might be a drop
Underneath every robot vacuum are downward-facing infrared sensors. They fire a beam at the floor and measure what bounces back, and if nothing comes back the machine concludes there is nothing there and reverses. That is what stops it falling down your stairs.
A very dark rug can absorb enough of that infrared light that little returns, so the sensor reports a drop where there is a rug. The machine then backs away from something perfectly safe. It is a limitation of the physics rather than a fault, and it is why a black flatweave sometimes gets skipped while an identical light-coloured one does not.
The wheels sink into the pile
Deep pile behaves like soft ground. The wheels press in, the machine sits lower relative to the top of the fibres, and it needs more motor effort to move. That costs battery and traction, and on very long pile it can bury the nozzle far enough to stall.
The edge is a step, and steps are where things catch
Rug edges are rarely a clean vertical. A bound edge, a rolled corner or a fringe presents something the side brush or roller can grab, and that is the mechanical cause of most rug incidents.

Flatweave and low pile
These are the easy cases. A firm, shallow surface gives the wheels grip and lets the roller make proper contact, so the machine cleans a low-pile rug about as well as it cleans a hard floor. The Carpet Foundation notes that loop pile constructions "replicate the look of natural flooring such as coir and sisal", and those tight surfaces are exactly what robots handle best.
Medium and high pile
Here suction and roller design start to matter, because debris sits below the surface rather than on it. The V50 Ultra Complete publishes a 60 mm crossing height with 24,000Pa and triple anti-tangle mechanisms, which is comfortable territory for medium pile.
For thicker rugs, more agitation helps as much as more pull. The Z60 Ultra Roller Complete pairs 28,000Pa with an anti-tangle roller arrangement and an 80 mm crossing height, and its two brushes flex the pile open rather than skating across the top of it.
One caveat on suction figures. Comparing them between two machines in the same range is fair, because they are measured the same way, but comparing across brands is not, since each manufacturer measures under its own conditions and the international method for measuring household vacuum performance, IEC 60312-1, measures something different from a headline pressure figure. On a rug, roller design and wheel traction matter as much as the number does.
Shag and very long pile
Be straightforward about this one: shag is not a robot vacuum job. Above roughly 30 mm of pile the machine loses traction, the nozzle buries itself, and no amount of suction compensates. Fence it off in the app and use a stick vacuum on it.
Tassels and fringes
Fringes are the single most common cause of a robot vacuum stopping on a rug, and the risk runs both ways: the machine jams, and the fringe can be pulled loose.
Nothing detects a tassel reliably, because it is thin, low and the same colour as the rug. The fix is physical. Tuck the fringe under the rug, or draw a no-go zone that keeps the machine a few centimetres clear of that edge.
Rug pads and door thresholds
A thick, spongy underlay turns a crisp rug edge into a soft ramp, and a soft ramp is harder for a robot to read and to climb than a firm step. Low-profile pads work better with robot vacuums than cushioned ones.
Door thresholds are the related problem, and in British houses they matter more. Measure the tallest door bar or floor transition on the machine's route and compare it with the published crossing height before you buy, because a robot that cannot pass a threshold does not clean the room behind it.
What pile height can a robot vacuum handle?
Up to about 20 mm comfortably, and 20 to 30 mm with strong suction and good traction. Above 30 mm you are into shag territory and a robot is the wrong tool.
Measure yours rather than guessing: press a ruler down to the backing at the edge of the rug and read the height of the fibres. It takes ten seconds and it settles the question.
Do robot vacuums get stuck on rugs?
Occasionally, and almost always for one of three reasons: a fringe wrapped round the roller or side brush, a shag pile that has robbed the wheels of traction, or a lightweight rug that has rucked up and jammed underneath the machine.
All three are preventable. Tuck fringes, fence off shag, and put a gripper under any rug light enough to slide, because a rug that moves is far more likely to cause a problem than a rug that stays put.
Do robot vacuums avoid rugs when mopping?
Good ones do, and the specification that tells you how well is mop lift height. When carpet is detected the mop assembly rises, and if it rises further than your pile is deep, your rug stays dry.

Will a robot vacuum damage a rug?
In normal use, no. Two situations deserve care: a fringe drawn into a roller can pull threads out of the edge of a rug, and a stiff bristle brush bar can pluck at loop pile, which is why a rubber roller is the safer design on loops and on wool.
Wool rugs are worth a specific mention. Vacuuming them frequently is fine and good for them, but anything wet is a different matter, so check WoolSafe's care guidance before any cleaning product or damp mop goes near a wool or silk rug. New wool also sheds loose fibre for several weeks, which fills the bin quickly and is the rug settling rather than damage.
The five-minute check before you buy
Do this with a tape measure and you will not be guessing.
- Measure your deepest pile at the rug edge, down to the backing, in millimetres. That number decides whether mop lift clears it.
- Measure your tallest threshold on the machine's route, in millimetres, and compare it with the published crossing height.
- Check every rug edge for fringes, tassels and curling corners, and note which ones will need tucking or fencing off.
- Push each rug with your foot. If it slides, it needs a gripper before a robot goes near it.
- Look at your dark rugs and accept that one of them may need a no-go zone if the cliff sensors read it as a drop.
Those five numbers and observations tell you more than any specification sheet.
Practical fixes if you already own one
Most rug problems are solved in the app or with five minutes of tidying rather than by buying a different machine.
Draw a no-go zone around the shag rug and around any fringed edge. Tuck fringes under. Fit low-profile grippers to anything that slides. If a dark rug is being skipped, a no-go zone stops the machine hesitating there on every run and you vacuum that one by hand.
And check the side brush weekly. It is the part that catches rug fibres and long hair, and clearing it takes seconds.
One setting worth changing if your rugs are the main reason you bought the machine: schedule the vacuum-only run separately from the mopping run. Vacuuming can cover the whole floor including every rug, while mopping only needs to cover the hard flooring, and separating the two removes any chance of a damp pad meeting a pile it cannot clear.
