The best robot vacuum for carpet in the UK is one that pairs high sealed suction with a rubber anti-tangle roller and lifts its mop clear of the pile. British homes are carpeted in a way that most of Europe is not. Fitted carpet is still the default in bedrooms, on stairs and in a great many living rooms, usually laid over underlay, and often butting up to tile or LVT at a door bar. That is a harder brief for a robot vacuum than the largely hard-floored homes most of these machines are designed and demonstrated on.

This guide explains what carpet actually does to a vacuum, how the pile types a British carpet fitter would name behave differently, where carpet detection and mop lift matter, and which of four MOVA models suits which kind of carpeted house. It also says plainly what a robot vacuum will not do to your carpet.

Why carpet is harder work than a hard floor

On a hard floor, dust and grit sit on top of the surface. Airflow alone will lift most of it, and the brush is really only there to sweep debris into the path of the airflow.

Carpet works against that in three ways at once. The pile is a dense mat of fibres that grit falls between and settles under, so the debris is below the surface rather than on it. That same dense pile chokes airflow: as the nozzle presses into the carpet, the gaps that air needs to move through close up, and airflow is what carries dirt away. And the machine now has to lift particles against the grip of the fibres holding them.

Which is why agitation matters as much as suction. A roller turning against the pile flexes the fibres open and knocks embedded grit loose so the airflow can take it. Suction without agitation cleans the top of a carpet and leaves the bottom alone.

Underlay adds a British complication. A carpet laid over good underlay is springy, so a robot's wheels sink slightly and its nozzle rides higher relative to the base of the pile than the specification sheet implies. Two homes with the same carpet and different underlay will not clean identically.

Do robot vacuums work on carpet?

Yes, on low and medium pile carpet, and they do it well when they run often. Deep and long pile is where they struggle, and no robot vacuum deep cleans carpet in the sense a carpet cleaner does.

The real advantage is frequency. Grit is what wears carpet out, because every footstep grinds it against the base of the fibres, and a machine that runs daily removes that grit before it is trodden in. A powerful upright used once a week cannot compete with that on maintenance, even though it will beat any robot on a single deep clean.

British carpet types and what each one demands

Carpet is not one surface. The styles a UK fitter would name behave differently under a robot vacuum, and the differences are worth knowing before you buy.

Twist pile

The workhorse of British homes. The Carpet Foundation describes twist pile as carpets with "a coarse, rugged finish", and that texture is exactly what a robot vacuum handles best. The yarn is twisted tightly, the surface is relatively firm, and a roller can flex it without sinking.

If your house is mostly twist pile, you have the easiest carpet in this list and you do not need the most expensive machine to clean it.

Saxony and deep pile

Saxony is the plush, soft-underfoot carpet that turns up in British bedrooms. The Carpet Foundation notes it "has a deep pile with a pronounced sensuous feel" and that "though popular in bedrooms, they do flatten so are not recommended in heavy traffic areas".

That depth is the problem for a robot vacuum. The nozzle presses in, airflow drops, and the machine works harder for less. Deep Saxony is where suction and roller design stop being marketing numbers and start mattering, and where a low-powered machine will visibly only clean the top.

Loop pile and Berber

Loop pile leaves the yarn uncut, so the surface is a field of small loops. The Carpet Foundation says these "replicate the look of natural flooring such as coir and sisal", and adds a warning worth repeating in a robot vacuum context: "cats and anything with long claws are not a good idea with loop pile carpet".

The same logic applies to anything that can catch a loop. A stiff bristle brush bar can pull at loop pile and, on a poorly made or already damaged carpet, snag it. A rubber roller is the safer choice here because it flexes the surface rather than raking it.

Wool and wool-rich blends

Wool is the fibre a lot of British carpet is still made from, and the Carpet Foundation's view is direct: "wool has long been recognised as the best", being "soft and warm, resilient, naturally flame retardant" and not prone to "ugly out". It is often sold as an 80/20 or 50/50 blend with man-made fibres to improve wear.

Two practical points follow. New wool carpet sheds loose fibre for weeks, which fills a dustbin far faster than you expect and has nothing to do with the machine. And wool needs care with cleaning products rather than with vacuuming, so if you ever go beyond vacuuming, check the WoolSafe care guidance before anything wet touches it.

Polypropylene, by contrast, is the easy one. The Carpet Foundation notes it has "the added benefit of being 'stainfree' and easy to clean", which is why it ends up in family rooms and rentals.

Fitted carpet, rugs and the door bar

A fully fitted room is straightforward for a robot vacuum: one surface, no edges to climb. A rug on a hard floor is the awkward case, because the machine has to get onto it, stay on it, and keep the mop off it.

Door bars and thresholds decide whether a robot can reach your carpeted rooms at all. Measure the highest one in the house in millimetres before you choose a model, because a machine that cannot climb it will clean your kitchen beautifully and never see the lounge.

How much suction do you need for carpet?

There is no published threshold that says a given number of Pascals is enough for carpet, and any article that gives you one has made it up. What can be said honestly is that deeper pile needs more, and that the number on its own does not predict how well a machine cleans.

A Pascal figure is a pressure measurement taken by the manufacturer under its own conditions. The international method for measuring household vacuum performance, IEC 60312-1, is a different thing entirely, and it exists because pressure alone is not performance. Airflow, the seal around the nozzle, roller design and brush contact all change the outcome.

So compare Pascal figures within one brand's range, where they are at least measured the same way, and treat cross-brand comparisons with scepticism. Carpet detection and boost, in practice

Carpet detection is a sensor deciding, in real time, that the surface underneath has changed, then acting on it. On a vacuum-and-mop machine there are two separate actions: raise suction for the pile, and get the wet mop out of the way.

MOVA implements this differently across the range, and the differences are more useful than the marketing names. The Z60 Ultra Roller Complete uses what MOVA calls AutoShield Tech, which it describes as detecting carpets, lifting the mop, shielding moisture, and keeping full suction and side brush active. The E40 Ultra uses ultrasonic carpet detection. The P50 Pro Ultra takes a different route: rather than lifting the pads, MOVA states that "when moving to carpets, the robot automatically detaches the mop pads, ensuring carpets are completely dry".

Where detection falls over

Detection is good, not infallible, and it is worth knowing the failure modes before they surprise you.

  • Thin flatweave rugs. A very low pile can read as hard floor, so the mop stays down and the rug gets damp.
  • Very dark carpet. Optical cliff sensors can read a black or very dark surface as a drop, and the machine backs away from it rather than cleaning it.
  • The first few centimetres of a rug. Detection happens as the machine arrives, so the leading edge can be crossed before the mop is clear.
  • Fringes and tassels. Nothing detects these usefully. Tuck them or fence them off in the app.

Why mop lift height matters, in millimetres

Mop lift is the distance the mop assembly rises when carpet is detected, and it is the single most overlooked specification in a carpeted home. If the lift is shallower than your pile is deep, a damp pad still touches the carpet.

MOVA publishes 14 mm for the Z60 Ultra Roller Complete and 10.5 mm for the V50 Ultra Complete. It does not publish a lift figure for the P50 Pro Ultra, because that model removes the pads at the dock instead, or for the E40 Ultra. If you have deep pile and you intend to mop, the lift figure is the number to check first.

Can robot vacuums clean deep pile carpet?

They can maintain it, and they will not deep clean it. On deep Saxony or long pile, expect a robot vacuum to keep the surface presentable and to remove the grit that arrives day to day, while dirt that has been in the base of the pile for a year stays there.

Long pile also brings mechanical problems that no amount of suction solves. The machine can beach itself, wheels lose traction, and the nozzle can bury itself deep enough to stall. Shag and very long pile is the point at which the honest answer is that a robot vacuum is the wrong tool.

Do robot vacuums damage carpet?

In normal use, no. The two real risks are a stiff bristle brush pulling at loop pile, and a mop that stays down when it should have lifted, which leaves carpet damp rather than damaged but can encourage odour if it happens repeatedly.

A rubber roller is the safer design on loop pile and on wool, because it flexes fibres instead of raking them. Fringes are the genuine hazard: a tassel drawn into a roller can pull threads out of the edge of a rug, and the fix is to tuck the fringe under or exclude the area in the app rather than to hope.

What a robot vacuum will not do to your carpet

This is where most carpet content overreaches, so it is worth being blunt. A robot vacuum removes dry soil. It does not extract, and it does not remove stains.

Deep cleaning a carpet means putting solution into the pile, agitating it and pulling the dirty water back out. That is a different machine with a pump, a brush and a recovery tank. No robot vacuum in any brand's range does it, and any page implying otherwise is selling you the wrong product.

So the sensible arrangement in a carpeted British home is a robot vacuum running daily for grit and hair, and a carpet cleaner used a few times a year and after accidents. MOVA's carpet cleaner range covers the extraction half.

Allergy is the other place to be careful. Is a robot vacuum enough for a fully carpeted house?

For the floors, in most fully carpeted homes, yes, provided the pile is low or medium and you run it daily. For stairs, no, because a robot cannot climb them, and British houses have a lot of stairs.

The recommendation, by house

Deep pile, mixed pile, or pets on carpet. The Z60 Ultra Roller Complete, with the highest suction in the range and its anti-tangle roller, is the one built for this. The 14 mm mop lift is the deepest MOVA publishes, which is what you want if deep pile and mopping have to coexist.

Carpet upstairs, hard floor downstairs. The V50 Ultra Complete at 24,000Pa is the all-rounder, and it is the same price as the Z60 at the time of writing, so choose between them on the roller system and the mop lift rather than on cost.

Mostly carpet, on a budget, mopping matters occasionally. The P50 Pro Ultra, which detaches its mop pads entirely for carpet, sidesteps the mop lift question rather than solving it by height. For a carpeted house that is arguably the cleverer approach.

Low pile twist throughout, first robot vacuum. The E40 Ultra with ultrasonic carpet detection is enough machine for the job and the least you can spend in the range without giving up carpet detection.

Who should not buy one

  • Shag or very long pile throughout. The machine will beach and bury itself. This is a stick vacuum job.
  • Houses that are mostly stairs. A robot cleans one level and cannot do a single step, so a small footprint per floor may not justify one.
  • Anyone whose actual problem is stains or ground-in dirt. You need extraction, not suction. Start with a carpet cleaner.
  • Anyone expecting to stop vacuuming. Stairs, sofas, mattresses and the car still need a cordless stick vacuum.

Do robot vacuums work on thick carpet?
